The works of Wes Anderson

Can we talk about Wes Anderson for a minute? “Wes Anderson who?” For those of you who really pay attention to good movies and know who Anderson is, you can skip to the next paragraph. For those of you who seriously don’t know who this Wes Anderson guy is, let me crack you an egg of knowledge. Wes Anderson is a director/screenwriter known for his quirky and dark comedy-dramas. He often casts Owen Wilson (who is also Anderson’s co-writer at times), Luke Wilson, and Bill Murray in various roles of varying prominence. He has also gotten some acting icons like James Caan, Angelica Houston, Meryl Streep and Gene Hackman to grace his movies. he is directed Rushmoreme, Tea real tenenbaums, Aquatic life with Steve Zissouand, more recently, Moonrise Kingdom. Maybe you saw him in that American Express commercial when he was directing a scene in a movie starring Jason Schwartzmann. Honestly, though, if you don’t know who he is now, then maybe his job isn’t to your liking. Maybe Step Up 14: The Last Handstand Prayed The Expendables 7: Where’s My Double? it could be more your speed. Okay, go ahead. I started watching Anderson movies when he was in high school and started with his first movie. rocket bottle. After that, I was hooked. I can’t really pinpoint what I like about his movies. They have a very calculated look, which means that you can tell a lot about what the characters were going to wear, what the sets would look like, which typewriter should be used in a given scene, etc. Many of his characters want to be bigger than they really are, something everyone can relate to. Soundtracks almost always have perfect pitch (notably Rushmore Y The real Tenenbaums). When you’re watching a Wes Anderson movie, you know it. It just has this unique feel that other movies just don’t have. Here are my top three Wes Anderson movies:

The real Tenenbaums

This was, for a long time, my favorite movie (it has since been replaced by Sidey). A man, Royal Tenenbaum, tries to reconcile with his family (a family that has ostracized him) by telling them that he has cancer. In minor and major ways, he has affected the lives of his wife and his three children. But this is no ordinary family. His wife is a brilliant archaeologist; his eldest son is a great (well, once great) tennis player; his other son was a business genius even before he reached puberty; and his adopted daughter is a celebrated, if depressed, writer. They have all been successful in one way or another, but none of them are happy. Everyone is missing something. Royal hopes it’s him.

Margot: You probably don’t even know my middle name.

Royal: That’s a trick question. You don’t have one.

Margot: Helen.

Royal: That was my mother’s name.

Margot: I know it was.

Rushmore

I have to admit that my main draw for this film is Bill Murray. To quote a line from one of my favorite defunct shows (weird and nerdy), “Bill Murray is the funniest man on the face of the planet.” In RushmoreIt’s fun, but in a different way. His character, Herman Blume, is a dull, boring rich man who hates his family (even his family portrait has him painted with an almost painful look on his face). Enter Max Fischer. Max (Jason Schwartzmann) is an achiever at Rushmore Academy, but he excels at things that aren’t worth it. Who cares if he’s the founder of the Trap and Skeet Club? Regardless, Herman and Max fall in love with the same woman, a teacher at Max’s school. The plot may not appeal to you, but Bill Murray’s performance should.

Herman: (giving a speech to Rushmore students) They have it very easy. I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my children here because the fact is that they go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now for some of you it doesn’t matter. You were born rich and you will stay rich. But here’s my advice to the rest of you: go for the rich guys. Put them in the crosshairs and eliminate them. Just remember, they can buy anything, but they can’t buy the backbone. Don’t let them forget it. Thanks.

Fantastic Mr. Fox

This movie is different from all the other Anderson movies because it’s stop-motion animation and I suppose you could say it’s a children’s movie. But don’t worry, adults can find plenty to enjoy here, too (“What the heck?”). This film is peppered with the voices of some of the greatest actors: George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Willem Dafoe, and Bill Murray. Oh, Jason Schwartzmann is in this one too. I’m not into children’s movies (I’ve only seen Beauty and the Beast Y The Lion King once and I was actually a kid when those movies came out), but it’s actually quite funny and the soundtrack is a little more quirky than usual, but it still belongs to me.

Franklin Bean: What are you singing, Petey?

Petey: …I just made it up on the fly, really.

Franklin Bean: That’s just a weak composition! You wrote a bad song, Petey!
