Pros and cons of being a postman

All jobs have advantages and disadvantages. Being a postman has advantages and disadvantages, of course. One of the disadvantages is the fact that you have to work in all kinds of weather. Sometimes it’s cold or wet and you have to be outside. You will also have to get up early as your daily rounds will take a while and you will have to finish them.

However, the silver lining does have some real benefits. An important one is that you can get this job without much education. You don’t have to spend a fortune on tuition and sit in classrooms for years to be qualified to be a postal worker.

You do not necessarily need a driver’s license. It will make getting the job easier, so it’s helpful, but not required. You can always deliver mail on foot or by bike, if necessary, and can even be a mail sorter where you don’t have to deliver mail at all.

The minimum wage is the general starting salary. However, that will not be the case for long. As you take on more responsibilities and spend more time at the post office, you’ll earn regular raises.

Pretty soon, you’ll be in a supervisory or management position and earning a living wage. You will have a lot of responsibility. A manager at the post office may expect to schedule the work of others, supervise the work, delegate tasks, etc.

There really isn’t any advantage to the job. Some people expect postage to be free, then are disappointed. There is no free postage for postal workers. However, postal workers are issued uniforms, so you won’t have to worry about wearing your own clothes to work. You will have different clothes for all types of weather since you will be outside in all weathers.

Estimate that you will work any day of the week except Sunday. You will also have holidays off since the post office is a federal employer. On the other hand, you’ll work extra shifts during the holidays, to make sure everyone’s mail and holiday packages arrive on time. It’s a great job. The Post Office is an excellent employer and you will have a steady job performing a meaningful service.

The Internet has not changed this. Some people think that email will mean that snail mail will disappear. That makes no sense. Yes, people are sending more emails, but at the same time, people are shopping online, and those packages need to be delivered. Postal jobs will be around for a long time.
