New Year’s Promises
Every year millions of well-intentioned people make New Year’s resolutions; I used to be one of them. I don’t know about the others, but for whatever reason, I’ve never been able to stick to when I call them “resolutions.” The word resolve comes from the word “resolve” and is basically a promise. There is the problem. When and if I miss my mark on any of them, I always end up feeling like a loser. Since my intentions are truly honorable, I found a way that works for me.
First of all, I like to wait until mid-January. By then the hustle and bustle of the holidays is over and I have a real idea of what I would like to see change or improve, and I am more aware of the things I hope to achieve during the new year. Then I write personal notes to all of them. This will be my third year doing it this way.
CJ’s Notes for 2012:
dear rain,
Please go. This is not your time. How can I think of “winter” without the white thing you can so easily become? Take it easy for a while. Rest. Why not come back in the spring?
Dear Santa,
Christmas seemed to come a week early this year. I saw decorations right after Halloween. If you don’t mind my asking, will you have your elves working early this year as well? I want to be sure and send you my letter early and avoid the rush.
Dear freshly laundered bed,
Still as you are. I will dream of you all day.
Dear Recently Cleaned Duplex,
Never get carried away again. You are so worth it and I love you this way.
dear hair,
Let’s find a conditioner and shampoo that work well together and stick with it.
Dear Universe,
Please help sell my books, a million or so would be nice. Oh, and please send as many people to my website. It is a horrible and invisible feeling. I don’t want to feel invisible anymore. No one should have to feel invisible.
Dear bank account,
If I promise to feed and care for you, will you grow up and make me proud?
dear body,
If I promise not to overfeed you and take you to the gym, will you cringe and make me proud?
Dear family,
I love you all and wish we lived closer. I have a mountain of love to share. The pocket of my heart is full of hugs that must also be shared.
Dear Robert,
I adore you. Please never change. Your kisses make my whole world spin. Your love was worth waiting a lifetime. Let’s agree to even meet at the next one, okay?
With all my affection,
Me
