Mitsubishi’s 2010 Mariner competes in the Mini SUV segment

The 2010 Mercury Mariner pleases the small crossover SUV segment, but has daunting competition in Toyota’s RAV4 and Chevrolet Equinox. If you are considering purchasing this vehicle, consider upgrading the engine to get the best possible performance from your Mercury Mariner.

The 2010 Mercury Mariner offers two engine options. A 2.5-liter inline-4 can handle basic driving and makes 171 horsepower and pound-feet of torque. For city driving, this option moves the Mariner for smooth overtaking and acceleration maneuvers, but for those interested in a vehicle with true lift and go, consider the improved engine options for the Mercury Mariner. The 3.0-liter V6 offered as an upgrade makes 240 horsepower and 223 pound-feet of torque. That power can be used to tow up to 3,500 pounds or just to get ahead of that annoying slow semi on the freeway.

However, there is a downside to upgrading your engine. The standard package offers better gas mileage at an average of 23 miles per gallon, 21 in the city and 28 on the highway. Consumers viewing the Mariner are likely to worry about fuel efficiency, so cutting down to 21 mpg when switching to the 3.0-liter V6 might not be to everyone’s liking. For those who really care about fuel, there is a hybrid model that boasts even greater fuel efficiency.

Whichever you choose, be sure to examine the competition as well, as Toyota’s RAV4 and Chevrolet Equinox have consistently received high marks for performance and mileage.
