Dog Tear Stain: Are Tear Stains Caused By Raising Your Dog?

Does your dog have tear stain problems?

Tear stains or eye stains are the reddish-brown stains you may see around your dog’s eyes and sometimes on the sides of the face.

There are many potential factors that cause tear stains which can include:

Genetics – Your dog may have a favorably large facial bone structure or eyes that cause excessive tearing. The anatomy of many dog breeds is purely more conducive to excessive tearing. It’s just a fact of life for many breeds and according to my vet it’s nothing to be alarmed about.

Some of the dog breeds with a genetic tendency to tear staining include: Maltese, Maltipoo, Poodle, Shih Tzu, Bulldog, American Eskimo, Bichon Frize, Terrier, Westie, Chihuahua, Havanese, Lhasa Apso, and Coton de Tulear.

environmental factors -If your dog is exposed to a lot of dust or things that cause allergic reactions, it may cause your dog to have more tears. It is important that you keep your dog clean with frequent baths so that hair, dust, and other debris do not get into your dog’s eyes and cause irritation.

emotional factors – Dogs that are not stressed and live in a loving and happy home tend to cry less than an anxious, lonely or abused pet. Because the causes of tearing are so varied, it cannot be clearly stated that there is a singular connection between your dog’s emotional state and tear staining, but you can be sure that a happy dog with less stress will be in better health usually.

I found the reddish-brown stains from pigments and tear drainage to be difficult to remove from my dog’s face and believe me, I tried so many different “cures” for my Maltese that didn’t work. It was very frustrating!

I finally found a simple method that is so easy to use and my dog’s faces are now clean, healthy and blemish free! Not only do their faces look better, my pooches feel better without the miserable blemishes and facial irritation they battled for so long.
