Debating the solution to Nairobi’s slums

There is little debate about the dire humanitarian crisis in Nairobi’s slums, as living conditions are appalling. There is raw sewage everywhere, trash looted and no toilets, plumbing sewage system in the makeshift shelters. Of course, these are always problems when humans live in high densities without the services of modern civilization.

The Kenyan government and Nairobi city officials do not want the slums there and say they are illegal and not their responsibility. They want them to go away. Of course we all know that won’t happen. Today the US funds $1.6 billion for Kenya, take it away, use it to solve this problem now. Not in the next year or a decade when the slums will double in size or more, even considering the deaths from HIV/AIDS, which will spread due to prostitution, drug use, etc., to the regular population.

Some have said they need to establish brick kilns and/or sponsor local brick businesses in Nairobi. Maybe convenient, especially for the local brick company, but will bricks and mortar really work or is Instant Tilt up concrete construction better suited with river silt? Whatever the case, any plan must be done quickly and section by section; rapid expansion, as in 1-2 months per section or less. We build things as fast as we do in the US and here with hardly any labor, imagine if we had labor like you have over there?

It’s time to get down to business, get rid of the political barriers, stop the corruption and leave the committee meetings. I certainly hope this article is of interest and has prompted thought.
