10 things to do on the beach on vacation

Visiting the beach on vacation evokes many different activities that can be enjoyed by one person or in a group. Spending time on Virginia Beach, along Virginia’s waterfront, lends itself to staying in suites and resorts on family vacations. Here are 10 things to do while spending hours on the waves and sand of the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay on your Virginia Beach vacation.

tan
Lying on the beach in a bathing suit or shorts and a t-shirt is one of the most basic and popular types of relaxation for a Virginia Beach resort vacation. A soft towel or a comfortable chair is all that is needed to enjoy the sun amidst the gentle sound of waves crashing on the beach. Beachgoers should wear sunscreen to protect themselves from the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

sand sculpture
Building a sand sculpture does not require any special equipment. While a bucket and shovel are useful for creating molded sculptures and basic structures, using your arms and hands to sculpt wet sand is usually enough. Plastic sandcastle molds are available at local stores for those looking for a fancier sandcastle building experience.

skimboarding
One of the more unusual means of riding ocean waves is a skimboard. The person runs in a few inches of water on the sand, then drops the skimboard and jumps off for a quick ride. Some head into the waves and complete the journey with a somersault into deeper water. Others go around in circles or travel as far down the beach as the skimboard’s momentum allows.

Surf
Home to the East Coast Surfing Championships, many people bring or rent a board and go surfing on their Virginia Beach vacations. Some areas are restricted during certain hours where bathers are present.

boogie boarding
Boogie boards are made of rigid buoyant material, usually foam. They are made to ride the waves from a crest to run aground on the sand. Some prefer to use them as a flotation device in the water. They are used by children and adults alike for hours of fun in the water, then covered with a towel as a soft resting place in the sand.

have a picnic
Pack a lunch in a picnic basket and bring a cooler. Lunch on the beach is another popular pastime. Some Virginia Beach hotels and restaurants offer picnic lunches for their guests as a quick and easy meal on the sand for a nominal fee.

Walking
A classic walk on the beach is a way to enjoy the sand, waves and sounds of the ocean. It is good for those who want to exercise their legacies and free their minds.

Football
Virginia Beach is now home to an annual sand soccer tournament. This sport has gained popularity in recent years. During the spring, summer, and fall, there are also many pick-up games along the beach.

Volleyball
Several volleyball courts are set up on the sand for guests at Virginia Beach’s oceanfront hotels. It is common to see games during the day in the summer.

Swimming
Swimming in the waves is a way to cool off from the heat of the summer sun. It’s also a good cardio workout and way to burn calories for those managing their weight on vacation in Virginia Beach.
